Off Kilter Bride

Off Kilter
: a bit askew
: eccentric, unconventional
CJL 518

Courtney + Jamie had a beautiful ceremony, it started with a quick text asking me to mark my calendar for a Thursday three weeks from now! Marked on calendar! Done. You had me at wedding at NoDa Brewery.

This was a small intimate ceremony with friends and family. They had one of their friends play guitar and sing a couple of songs, one of their dearest friends as the officiant, complete with a sailor’s cap and full beard! Somewhere between Amish and ZZtop but it a sexy way.

Some of the most simplest weddings that I have seen have been the most romantic. Courtney’s dress came from a local vintage store in Charlotte, it was so beautiful, it was hand sewn with the original bride’s name stitched in. She wore second hand Chanel shoes and 50s housewife red lips. Yes, love and joy. Her groom Jamie, wore fitted trousers, monochromatic navy, complete with a driving cap with sexy tattoos sneaking out of his collar.

Beer was flowing freely, of course there was a special brew for the occassion Cozy Rose, a red ale. They had personalized candy bars, handmade buckeyes, a local food truck, The Tin Kitchen made homemade bbq pork stuff mac&cheese cupcakes and mini chicken pot pies and the Tin Kitchen offered their full menu for the wedding guest.

Let Them Eat Wedding Cake

Every wedding I see the most brilliant ideas and of course it’s always simple, creative, where you say to yourself, why didn’t I think of that?

Last weekend Teddy & Hannah tied the knot at City Roots Farm in Columbia, they had family members make cake and pies that were their favorite or family member’s favorites.

Of course they were delicious, but the most delicious idea was the little printed recipe cards designed by Three Eggs Design, of course Hannah found them on Etsy.  I don’t know why any wedding is cookie cutter these days.  Thank you ETSY!  Such a great idea and a beautiful wedding filled with sugar and love!

Questions for your Wedding Photographer

Questions you should ask your photographer.

  Answered by Poprock Photography

•  What’s your primary style? Posed & formal, relaxed, photojournalistic, candid, traditional?

I prefer natural images, showing genuine emotion but I understand  the need for formals. My strong suit is candid.  I think everyone can take a good photo, you just have to know the tricks.  This is where an engagement session really comes in handy, never say no to save a few dollars, it is valuable to you and the photographer.

• Do you use an assistant/second shooter? Is there an extra charge for this?

$500 extra for a whole day- Second shooters are fantastic if your budget allows.

• Will you be present at our wedding or send an employee? I am a one man show, unless a second shooter is arranged.

• Will you have backup equipment available? Yes, I have two cameras and two external flashes, plenty of batteries and plenty of memory cards. One of my cameras even backs up itself with two memory cards.
• And what happens if you get ill? I would have to be in the hospital not to show up at your wedding, I have a list for my husband to call photographers if something catastrophic happens.

• Can other people take photos while you are taking photos? Yes.

Not my second shooter!!

• How many photos come in each package?  Mucho!  You will get over 500 images from me of your wedding, I rarely delete old people, even if the photo is average.  Sometimes you even get blurry, non-perfect  photos because I alter them and I end up loving them!!! You could also ask a photographer to see a whole album of a wedding.  Most have them on a site that your friends and family can purchase images anyway, so you can peek at a wedding.

• Will you accept a list of specific photos to be taken? I will certainly accept a list, but it isn’t necessary.  It is good to remind photographers of blending families, so you aren’t calling a step mom the mother of the bride.  And sometimes people have a time frame, then they aren’t ready, someone forgets their lipgloss and one groomsmen/bridesmaid has to go somewhere.. parents are ready, Uncle Larry  is drunk behind the building…  It gets done, you just have to ebb and flow and trust your photographer, this is when it’s important to hire someone who has done multiple weddings.

We know you want a picture with Grandma!

• What attire will you and/or assistants wear? I wear comfort, I usually wear dresses and Converse.

Literally running circles around everyone at a wedding, comfortable shoes a must!!

• What time will you arrive and how long will you stay? I take photos of bride and groom getting ready and stay till the shut down time of event space,  unless specified otherwise.  8 to 10 hours is the norm. Say the wedding is at 4p- I arrive 2p- leave around  10p or 11p.  This is not set in stone, sometimes I go to brunches, bars or lunch with my bride or groom hours before the wedding.

• Should the event last longer than scheduled, will you stay? Extra charge? Yes, if there turns out to be an after party, I will stay for $100 an hour.

• How long after the event will the images be ready?  I try to put 20-100 images on Facebook immediately, then I take my time and go through EVERY image and edit, crop and enhance. Usually disk is in your hands within 40 days.

• What type and how much assistance will your provide in planning an album? Albums can be purchased.  Albums can be anything you desire, mostly are hardback, lay flat, black leather bound albums.

• Do we get the negatives/disk/access to FTP site? You get a disk of all images, free of watermarks.

• Is this your recent work that I’m seeing on your website? Yes, you can look at my blog, and on Facebook

• Do you provide a written contract and guarantee? YES!  Poprock Photography Prenuptial Agreement!  This is the single most reason to hire a professional.  If a friend is doing your wedding, what if they panic when it gets close?  What if their camera malfunctions?  Will they edit all the images and give you a disk? Will it arrive in a timely matter?  Can you hold them accountable if something goes wrong?

• When is the remaining balance after deposit due?  Full payment due 30 days before wedding.

Bridal Portrait Charlotte

I’m sure the stereo type Bridezilla exisit because well, we’ve seen them on TV, but I have been very lucky to only have lovely brides and Miss Brittany was sheer delight.  She is super smart with a giggly, girlfriend exterior with a wicked sense of humor.  Yes, doesn’t she sound awesome?  We traipsed all over Charlotte shooting everywhere from the Common Market, parking decks and churches in her beautiful mermaid dress.  I had to get her before she ran off to Mexico with her hot Russian for the real thing.  Thanks Brittany, can’t wait for the big day.

Sloane + Christian October 8, 2011

Sloane & Christian met in middle school and Sloane told Christian they were getting married.  Christian thought she was crazy.  I wonder if he still thinks that?  Sloane got her way and now she is on her honeymoon on some tropical island with her one true love. They had an outdoor cookout at Christian’s parent’s house the night before with all their friends and family and a beautiful, Beatles themed ceremony  at the Mint Museum Uptown Charlotte.  What a beautiful night filled with laughter and love.

Some of my favorite things about their wedding, first of all the groom and his groomsmen wore sleek grey suits, they looked stunning!  Love, love, love.  Tuxedos are always so illfitting, slim suits look much better.

They had a rack of vintage postcards and a mailbox to write your well wishes.

And they had a Beatles themed wedding, with one of their dj friends playing vinyl records.  What a great wedding!  Congratulations and best wishes Sloane & Christian.

Jazz Hand

I was sitting in a local restaurant hang out on a Tuesday afternoon and there was a cute couple sitting at the bar.  She had a flower in her hair and a beautiful burger in front of her. I could not resist. So I was talking to them, taking photos of their food and taking photos of them too. I give them my card and lo and behold, Jasmine calls me like six or eight months later for her wedding a year from then. In 2011. It was a long time away. I can’t believe it came so fast. Tres & Jasmine tied the proverbial knot on Saturday, September 17, 2011. It was a gorgeous ceremony. They had a Champagne brunch and passed out clear plastic boxes of S’mores fixings for their parting gifts. A day filled with love.  Ladies & gentlemen, Tres & Jasmine Hand!
